Are you wondering how you can keep your beautiful cosmetic makeup tattoos and traditional tattoos protected this summer? Paradise Tattoo Studios in Cheltenham has you covered with these helpful tips!

Summer is a season filled with sunshine, beach trips, and outdoor adventures. If you have any kind of tattoo it’s essential to pay special attention during this time of the year. The sun’s harmful UV/UVB rays, increased moisture, and activities like swimming can affect skin and the longevity and vibrancy of your tattoos. In this blog post, we will explore some practical tips to help you maintain and protect your tattoos during the summer months.

Why should I protect my tattoos and skin from the sun?

Sun exposure can have several effects on tattoos, including both immediate and long-term consequences. Here’s what you should be aware of and why:

Fading: Sun exposure is one of the primary causes of a tattoo fading. The UV and UVB rays from the sun can cause your tattoos to fade and lose their vibrancy. Cover your tattoos in a decent factor 50+ SPF sunscreen.

Skin Damage: Excessive sun exposure can damage the skin itself, which can indirectly affect the appearance of a tattoo. Sunburns, for example, can cause the skin to peel and heal unevenly, potentially altering the tattoo’s texture and clarity.

Premature Aging: UV radiation from the sun accelerates the aging process of the skin. It can lead to the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. When tattoos are exposed to this aging process, the skin surrounding the tattoo can change in texture and color, affecting the overall look of the tattoo.

Should I maintain a good skincare routine during the summer?

Is it important to have a skincare routine when I have tattooed skin? The answer to this common question is a definite YES!

Apart from the obvious recommendation to always wear a high SPF sunscreen out in the wild, we also strongly recommend that you follow a good skincare routine to make sure your skin is feeling and looking its best.

Tattoos have the ability to leave you feeling confident and empowered, so it’s essential that you keep giving your tattoos continued love to keep them looking their best. Especially if you’re spending time in the sea or swimming pool as the chlorine, chemicals and salt will cause the skin to become dry.

When it comes to tattoo and skincare, it’s a little like buying the car you’ve always dreamt of owning and having the finest custom paint job added to your new ride – you’d do everything you could to ensure that paint job could stand the test of time by washing, waxing and buffing your pride and joy! Well, your tattooed brows, lips, freckles and traditional tattoos are no different, although we do have some pointers on what you should be looking out for in your skincare products to ensure that they aren’t accelerating the aging process and causing fading!

Your skin care routine: ‘Active’ skin care containing retinol, acids and AHA’s etc should never be used directly on the tattooed area, even once healed, as these ingredients will accelerate pigment fade.

Hydration is also a big player in the skincare game!

Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water has multiple benefits, especially during the summer months!

Not getting enough water into your system can impact your skin in a number of ways, making it feel dry and flaky in some cases. It’s advisable that healthy people drink between four and six cups a day.

What does this have to do with your tattoos? Well, if your skin looks and feels good, so should your beautiful tattoos!
